During Old Stone Fort Days, Ben Carlos of the 1st Ulster County Militia presented an Indentured Servant Auction. Indentured Servants were people, both children and adults, who worked under contract to another person to pay off a debt. While they were not slaves, they were legally bound to work for the person who owned their indenture. The person they were indentured to had certain legal obligations as well. The servants could not be mistreated and were frequently taught a skill. If they were illiterate, they were usually taught how to read and write.
